The Volkswagen Touareg is a mid-size luxury SUV that has stood the test of time since its introduction in 2002.

First Generation (2002-2010)

The first-generation Touareg debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 2002. It offered a blend of off-road capability, luxury, and German engineering.

Available in three engine options: 3.2-liter V6, 4.2-liter V8, and 5.0-liter V10 TDI.

In 2007, a facelift introduced new headlights, taillights, and a redesigned grille. Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system was standard across all models. The first-generation Touareg received several awards, including Motor Trend’s 2004 SUV of the Year.

Sales peaked in 2004 with over 70,000 units sold worldwide.

Second Generation (2010-2018)

The second-generation Touareg arrived in 2010, offering enhanced performance, technology, and fuel efficiency.  It was lighter than its predecessor, shedding around 450 pounds in weight.

  • The base model featured a 3.6-liter V6, producing 280 hp, 266 lb-ft of torque, and a 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds.
  • A 3.0-liter V6 TDI provided 240 hp, 406 lb-ft of torque, and achieved 0-60 in 7.0 seconds.
  • A hybrid model was introduced, combining a 3.0-liter V6 with an electric motor, generating 380 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque.  The hybrid model accelerated from 0-60 in 5.8 seconds, making it the fastest Touareg at the time.

Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system remained standard across all models.  A facelift in 2014 introduced a redesigned front fascia, LED headlights, and updated interior features.  An 8-speed automatic transmission replaced the previous 6-speed.

The second-generation Touareg continued to receive praise for its off-road capabilities and luxurious interior.

Sales

Sales remained steady, averaging around 50,000 units per year globally.

Third Generation (2018-Present)

The third-generation Touareg was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in 2018, showcasing cutting-edge technology and refined styling.  It features a striking new design, with a large grille and sleek headlights.

  • The base model offers a 3.0-liter V6 TDI, producing 282 hp, 443 lb-ft of torque, and a 0-60 time of 6.1 seconds.
  • A more powerful 4.0-liter V8 TDI is also available, generating 415 hp, 664 lb-ft of torque, and a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds. 4. A plug-in hybrid variant combines a 3.0-liter V6 with an electric motor, delivering 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.  The hybrid model boasts a 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds, highlighting its impressive performance.

Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is standard, providing excellent traction and handling.  An 8-speed automatic transmission continues to be the standard gearbox across all models.

The third-generation Touareg introduces the Innovision Cockpit, a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Advanced driver-assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and traffic-jam assist are available, enhancing safety and convenience.
